A tag team of Internet worms dubbed Zotob and Rbot have begun to knock out computers by slipping through some recently discovered holes in Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

Solution: Download and install the newest security patches available at Microsoft Windows Update.

One of the most identifiable signs of infection is the unexpected shutdown and rebooting of the computer, which may occur repeatedly. In addition, the worms can change the computer's Internet settings to prevent it from receiving help from Web-based antivirus programs or websites. Furthermore, the worms can allow Internet criminals to connect to the infected computer and hijack it, which not only gives them access to the victim's files, but also enables them to use the computer as a zombie or drone to attack other computers or websites.

Last week, Microsoft released new security patches to fix the flaws in Windows. Anyone using Windows 2000 or Windows XP should visit the Windows Update website immediately to install these updates along with any other fixes that might have been missed in recent months. Doing so will plug your security holes and help to protect the privacy of the files, credit-card numbers, financial statements, and other sensitive data stored on your computer. Although computers running Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows ME are not at risk for these particular worms, those systems must still be updated with previously released security patches to protect them from other flaws and threats.

In addition, Denver Geeks strongly urges you to do the following: use a name-brand antivirus program that has been updated with the latest antivirus definitions; use a software and/or hardware firewall, which will create a virtual shield that prevents thieves or digital threats from sneaking into or out of your computer; and avoid opening or running any attachments or files sent to you in an instant message or e-mail unless you are expecting to receive the attachments and you are 100% positive they are safe. If you are uncertain whether or not a friend or loved one intentionally sent you an attachment, simply call him/her or send an e-mail inquiry. The possibility exists that his/her computer is infected with a virus or worm that has sent copies of itself to each e-mail address found in the victim's address book.
